ไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางถึงใหญ่ สูงได้ถึง 15–25 เมตร ผลัดใบในฤดูแล้ง เรือนยอดเป็นพุ่มโปร่ง เปลือกต้นเรียบสีเทาอมน้ำตาล แตกเป็นร่องตามยาวเล็กน้อย ใบประกอบแบบขนนกปลายคี่ ใบย่อยเรียงตรงข้าม 5–7 คู่ รูปรี ปลายใบมนหรือเว้าเล็กน้อย ดอกออกเป็นช่อสีขาวหรือเหลืองอ่อน กลิ่นหอม ผลเป็นฝักแบน ยาว ปลายฝักแหลม มีเมล็ด 1–2 เมล็ดต่อฝัก เนื้อไม้สีน้ำตาลอมแดงถึงม่วงเข้ม มักมีลายเสี้ยนสวยงามและกลิ่นหอมเฉพาะ พบในป่าเบญจพรรณ ป่าเต็งรัง และป่าดิบแล้งในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยเฉพาะในประเทศไทย ลาว เมียนมา และเวียดนาม พบในพื้นที่ดินร่วนปนทรายหรือดินลูกรัง
A medium to large deciduous tree, reaching 15–25 m in height. The canopy is open and airy; bark grayish-brown, slightly fissured. Leaves are pinnate, with 5–7 pairs of opposite elliptic leaflets, apex rounded or slightly notched. Flowers are small, white to pale yellow, fragrant, and borne in panicles. Fruits are flat pods with pointed ends, usually containing 1–2 seeds. Heartwood is reddish-brown to dark purple, with attractive grain and a distinct, pleasant scent. The species occurs in mixed deciduous forests, dry dipterocarp forests, and dry evergreen forests across Southeast Asia, especially in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, often on sandy loam or lateritic soils.
