ไม้พุ่มหรือไม้ต้นขนาดเล็ก สูง 2–8 เมตร ลำต้นแตกกิ่งก้านเป็นพุ่มแน่น เปลือกสีน้ำตาลอ่อน ใบประกอบแบบขนนกปลายคี่ ใบย่อยรูปรีถึงรูปไข่ สีเขียวเป็นมัน มีกลิ่นหอมเมื่อขยี้ ดอกออกเป็นช่อแบบช่อกระจุกตามซอกใบหรือปลายกิ่ง ดอกสีขาว กลิ่นหอมแรง โดยเฉพาะในตอนเย็นและกลางคืน ผลเป็นรูปรีขนาดเล็ก สีแดงสดเมื่อสุก ภายในมีเมล็ด 1–2 เมล็ด พบทั่วไปในป่าเบญจพรรณ ป่าเต็งรัง และป่าดิบแล้งในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ รวมถึงประเทศไทย
A small tree or large shrub, 2–8 m tall, with dense foliage and light brown bark. Leaves pinnate with 3–9 glossy, oval to elliptic leaflets, aromatic when crushed. Flowers borne in clusters at leaf axils or branch tips, white, strongly fragrant, especially in the evening and night. Fruits are small, ovoid berries, turning bright red when ripe, each containing 1–2 seeds. Native to South and Southeast Asia, occurring in mixed deciduous forests, dry evergreen forests, and secondary growth areas. Widely cultivated in Thailand and other tropical regions.
