A medium-sized tree, 5–12 m tall, with pinnate leaves. Flowers pale pink to light purple, borne in short clusters along the branches. Fruits are longitudinally 5-angled, star-shaped when cut crosswise, green when unripe and yellow when ripe. The flesh is crisp, juicy and sweet-sour. Native to Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines and now widely cultivated in Thailand and other tropical regions worldwide.
