ไม้ยืนต้นผลัดใบ ขนาดกลางถึงใหญ่ สูง 15–25 เมตร เรือนยอดค่อนข้างโปร่ง ลำต้นเปลาตรง เปลือกต้นสีเทาหรือสีน้ำตาล แตกเป็นสะเก็ดบาง ๆ กิ่งอ่อนมีขนสีน้ำตาลปกคลุม ใบเดี่ยวเรียงสลับ รูปรีถึงรูปไข่ ปลายใบเรียวแหลม โคนใบสอบ ขอบใบจักฟันเลื่อยละเอียด หลังใบสีเขียวเข้ม ท้องใบมีขนสีน้ำตาลนุ่ม ดอกออกเป็นช่อกระจุกหรือช่อแยกแขนงตามปลายกิ่ง ดอกสีเหลืองนวล มีกลิ่นหอม ผลแห้งรูปไข่ ขึ้นตามป่าเบญจพรรณ ป่าเต็งรัง และป่าดิบแล้ง พบได้ทั่วไปในทุกภาคของประเทศไทย รวมถึงเมียนมา ลาว และเวียดนาม
A medium to large deciduous tree, 15–25 m tall, with a rather open crown. Bark gray to brown, peeling in thin flakes. Young branches are covered with brownish hairs. Leaves are simple, alternate, ovate to elliptic, 8–20 × 4–8 cm, apex acuminate, base cuneate, with finely serrated margins; upper surface dark green, lower surface densely pubescent with brown hairs. Flowers are borne in axillary or terminal panicles, small, yellowish-white, and fragrant. Fruits are small, dry capsules.

ปลูกเป็นไม้ให้ร่มเงาและไม้ประดับในบางพื้นที่
