ไม้พุ่มหรือไม้ต้นขนาดเล็ก สูง 1–3 เมตร แตกกิ่งก้านมาก ใบเดี่ยวออกตรงข้าม รูปรีหรือรูปไข่ ปลายใบแหลม ดอกสีขาวขนาดใหญ่กว่าพุดมาลัย มีทั้งดอกชั้นเดียวและดอกซ้อน (นิยมปลูกชนิดดอกซ้อนที่คล้ายกุหลาบ) มีกลิ่นหอมอ่อน ออกดอกตลอดปี ผลเป็นฝักคู่ เมื่อแก่แตกออกเห็นเมล็ดสีส้มแดง มีถิ่นกำเนิดในอินเดีย ศรีลังกา และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
A small shrub or small tree, 1–3 m tall, densely branched. Leaves opposite, elliptic to ovate, with pointed tips. Flowers large, white, occurring in both single and double forms (the double-flowered form resembles roses, hence the Thai name “Rose Gardenia”). Mildly fragrant, blooming year-round. Fruits are paired follicles, splitting open to reveal orange-red seeds. Native to India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
