ไม้ต้นขนาดเล็กถึงกลาง สูงประมาณ 6–10 เมตร ลำต้นและกิ่งคดงอ เปลือกสีน้ำตาลแตกเป็นร่องตื้น เนื้อไม้แข็งและหนักมาก ใบประกอบแบบขนนก ออกตรงข้าม ใบย่อย 2–3 คู่ รูปรีเล็ก ปลายมน โคนมนหรือสอบเล็กน้อย ดอกช่อออกที่ซอกใบหรือปลายกิ่ง กลีบดอกสีม่วงอมน้ำเงินสวยงาม ผลแห้งแตกได้เป็น 5 พู เมล็ดสีน้ำตาล มีถิ่นกำเนิดในแถบทะเลแคริบเบียนและอเมริกากลาง แต่นิยมปลูกในประเทศไทย
A small to medium-sized evergreen tree, 6–10 m tall, with a twisted trunk and branches. Bark brown and fissured; wood extremely dense and heavy. Leaves pinnate, with 2–3 pairs of small, oblong leaflets. Flowers borne in axillary or terminal clusters, bluish-purple and highly ornamental. Fruits are 5-valved capsules containing brown seeds. Native to the Caribbean and Central America, it is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in tropical regions, including Thailand.
